Founded in 1629 by Roger Conant and others from Plymouth and Cape Ann, Salem, the “City of Peace,” is a seaside community on the Atlantic Ocean. America’s first millionaires lived in Salem where fortunes were built on overseas trade, including tea from China and pepper from Sumatra. The legacy of their wealth lines Salem's streets in the forms of incomparable architecture and unique museums, and was home to American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. A colorful coastal city, Salem has been a popular destination for almost four centuries, and visitors include Presidents George Washington and John Quincy Adams as well as inventor Alexander Graham Bell. Commuter rail service is available, which provides 30-minute service to North Station, adjacent to Boston’s Financial District.
